Independence Day

On this day in 1836 delegates from the colonies of Texas meeting at Washington-on-the-Brazos signed the declaration of the independence of the Republic of Texas from the government of Mexico. Among the reasons listed in the document for this action was the dictatorship of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (former traitor to both the King of Spain and first Mexican Emperor) who had abolished the constitution of 1824, the lack of public education, the lack of rights to trial by jury, the lack of rights to bear arms, the lack of freedom of religion and the forced union with the state of Coahuila. Texas would not win its independence for another month.
